Position Summary Provide intermediate-level direct care and supervision to individuals within the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) and associated mobile or observation units. This role focuses on maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment through behavioral monitoring, teaching coping skills, and assisting with daily living activities. This is a strictly "awake" position; alertness is required at all times while on duty.
Supervision: Maintain continuous visual observation of individuals to ensure the safety of patients and staff; conduct 1:1 observations and unit rounds as assigned.
Behavioral Monitoring: Identify and report shifts in patient behavior, verbalizations, or anxiety levels to the clinical team.
Crisis Intervention: Utilize approved behavioral intervention techniques to manage agitation or violence; respond to emergencies calmly and effectively to prevent injury.
ADL Support: Assist individuals with hygiene, grooming, dressing, and meal/snack preparation.
Transitions: Manage the admission, transfer, and discharge process, including inventorying personal possessions and coordinating logistics.
Group Facilitation: Plan and lead skills-based educational groups focusing on social skills, self-esteem, and relaxation.
Mentorship: Act as a positive role model by maintaining professional boundaries and fostering therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
Cleanliness: Maintain a sanitary environment by changing linens, organizing treatment areas, and adhering to health standards.
Food Service: Manage pantry stock, monitor expiration dates, and assist patients with eating as needed.
Logistics: Safely operate system vehicles (including wheelchair-accessible units) for patient transport, ensuring all safety restraints and maintenance checks are completed.
Record Keeping: Complete progress notes and clinical documentation accurately and promptly in accordance with HIPAA, CMS, and Alabama Administrative Code.
Confidentiality: Protect patient privacy and 42 CFR sensitive information at all times.
Professionalism: Participate in shift reporting, attend mandatory workshops/trainings, and collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team.
Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Legal: Valid Driver’s License with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Age: Must be at least 21 years old (for vehicle insurability).
Screening: Must pass a comprehensive background check and drug screen.
Clinical Understanding: Foundational knowledge of mental illness, substance use disorders, and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Crisis Management: Proficiency in de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques.
Communication: Strong written and verbal skills in business English; ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.
Technical: Ability to operate standard office equipment and navigate electronic record systems.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift/move up to 50 lbs, perform frequent bending, squatting, and lunging, and execute physical holds or restraints per policy.
Stamina: Must remain awake and alert for the duration of the shift; ability to work rotating schedules, nights, and weekends.
Exposure: Potential exposure to disagreeable odors, body fluids, contagious diseases, and unpredictable/aggressive behaviors.
Travel: Ability to travel between facilities and operate transport vehicles in various weather conditions.
Direct Care: One (1) year of experience in a direct patient care role.
Specialization: One (1) year of experience specifically within a mental health or behavioral health setting.
