Job Description

Position Summary

The Hospital Cook prepares nutritious, high-quality meals for patients, visitors, and hospital staff while following physician-prescribed therapeutic diets, food safety regulations, and hospital nutrition standards. The Cook works closely with dietary staff, dietitians, and kitchen personnel to ensure meals are prepared accurately, safely, and on time.


Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks according to daily menus.
  • Follow physician-prescribed therapeutic diets (diabetic, cardiac, renal, low sodium, mechanical soft, pureed, etc.).
  • Prepare hot and cold food items using standardized recipes.
  • Portion meals according to nutrition guidelines.
  • Ensure food quality, freshness, and presentation.
  • Operate commercial kitchen equipment safely.
  • Maintain proper food temperatures during preparation and service.
  • Label and store food according to hospital policy.
  • Rotate inventory using FIFO (First In, First Out).
  • Maintain a clean and sanitary kitchen.
  • Wash and sanitize work areas and equipment.
  • Follow infection prevention and food safety standards.
  • Assist with inventory and food ordering.
  • Work with dietitians regarding patient dietary modifications.
  • Assist during emergency meal service when needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Food service or cooking experience
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Ability to stand for long periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hospital or healthcare food service experience
  • Culinary school certificate
  • Experience preparing therapeutic diets
  • Large-volume institutional cooking experience

  • Food Handler Card
  • ServSafe Food Protection Certification (preferred)
